Subaru BRZ is more than just a powerful Toyota GT 86

The only important thing you didn’t know about the Subaru BRZ is Horsepower. A big deal, as it was still unknown just how similar it would really be to the GT 86. Well, now we know, that they make an identical 197 HP and 151 Lb-Ft using the same engine, a  boxer four cylinder.
The 2.0-liter boxer should be capable of revving into absolute infinity.

The Subaru BRZ weighs just 2,689 Lbs at the curb, that makes it one of the lightest-weight sports cars available. The convertible Mazda Miata weighs 2,410 Lbs and makes just 158 HP. Also, the Subaru will be faster.

More Passion, More Fun: Toyota Recaptures The Joy Of Driving

Clearly this is the most important competition the Subaru BRZ has: its brother the Toyota GT 86. This new Coupe in volcanic orange was unveiled in another corner of the Tokyo Motor Show and it has some differences to the BRZ. The front is slightly different than on the BRZ, but the only noticeable difference out back is the lack of a spoiler, and the GT 86 looks pretty good without it.

Official Press Release: Subaru Unveils “SUBARU BRZ”

Subaru Unveils “SUBARU BRZ”

Tokyo, November 30, 2011 – Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, announced its world premiere of “SUBARU BRZ (display model)” at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011. (Open to public from December 3 to 11 at Tokyo Big Sight)

This is it: Subaru debuts the BRZ sport coupe

Toyota UK told us about the production GT 86 over the last weekend, and now Subaru shows us its version of the sports coupe: the BRZ. Not surprisingly, almost all of the details we know about both models are the same, including their naturally aspirated 2.0-liter horizontally opposed boxer engines, your choice of 6-speed manual or automatic with shift paddles transmissions, RWD-layout and the low center of gravity.

Subaru revealed a couple of tidbits that Toyota left out, including a svelte curb weight of 2,689 pounds and a standard tire size will be 215/45R17 rubber. Toyota says that the new GT 86′s engine will produce 197 bhp and 151 lb-ft of torque. Likewise, Subaru says its version will make a nice, round 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft.
